Is FXCM a scam or legit?

Our honest, evidence-based assessment of FXCM — regulation, Trust Score, red flags, and how to verify it yourself.

Our verdictLikely legitimate — but with caveats

Trust Score 68/100 · Editorial score 3.5/5

The short answer

FXCM appears to be a real, operating broker, but our review found meaningful caveats (see the red flags below). It is not an outright scam signal, but do your own checks first.

Regulation & legitimacy signals

Regulation status

International entities regulated by the FCA (UK), ASIC (Australia), FSCA (South Africa), and others. IMPORTANT: FXCM has been permanently banned from the US market since 2017 (see the risk note).

Green flags & red flags

Green flags
  • An established broker since 1999 with the mature Trading Station & MT4 platforms
  • Now backed by a large financial group (Jefferies/StoneX)
  • International entities regulated by FCA/ASIC/FSCA
Red flags
  • Permanently banned from the US market (2017) + a US$7 million fine for hiding a conflict of interest — a serious regulatory record
  • Trust was dented by that case; verify the entity serving your region
  • Leveraged products are high-risk

Risk & regulation note

IMPORTANT: In February 2017, FXCM was permanently banned from the US market by regulators (CFTC/NFA) and fined US$7 million for hiding a conflict of interest with a market maker (a misleading 'no dealing desk' claim). The company then exited the US. Its international entities are now regulated by the FCA and others, but this history is important to weigh before signing up.
